Intensive Care

 

Patients in ICU receive individual nursing care and attention.  NAEC is staffed by veterinarians and veterinary technicians 24/7.  We understand that pet emergencies can be stressful and upsetting to owners and our experienced team are here to help wherever possible.  The work of the critical care staff in the ICU makes a crucial difference to the chances that patients have of survival

Conditions that can benefit from ICU care include: Trauma, respiratory compromises, sepsis, bleeding disorders, unstable diabetes, gastrointestinal upset, status epilepticus, heat stroke, smoke inhalation, burns and urinary obstructions, among others.

The facilities include:

  • Walk in kennels, which are large enough to allow several staff members to attend to a patient in the kennel and allowing advance monitoring of the patients
  • A bank of smaller kennels, three of which, are oxygen cages with temperature and humidity control
  • Hallowell ventilator unit suitable for anesthesia and ICU patient ventilation

The ICU is equipped for advanced treatment and patient monitoring including:

  • Capnography,
  • Constant ECG
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Invasive and non-invasive blood pressure
